3 Tips to Take Your Relationship to the Next Level

If you had the chance to improve your relationships, how would you do it? What are the things you feel you need to do? You might be saying, well I’m not really in any relationship right now.

I do believe that all of us at one point or another are involved in a relationship. It might look different for each one of us. For some of us we might be in a romantic relationship, for some we might be in a parental relationship or maybe in a friendship relationship.

Some of us might be operating in some or all of them at once. Being that as it may, one thing I do know from my own experience as well from talking to others and helping clients I work with, that we can all use some help in taking our relationships to the next level.

Having that in mind, today I’ll concentrate on romantic relationships and I’ll share three tips that have personally helped me, and that I think if you apply them, they can help you too in taking your relationship to the next level.

Before we get into the tips we must all understand that romantic relationships in all their facets and complexities are an essential and fundamental component of our lives.

So what makes a good romantic relationship?

Here is what I’ve learned and what has helped me,

To have a good romantic relationship;

1. Have a Good relationship with yourself. We can’t expect to have a good relationship with anyone, much less a romantic relationship, if we don’t like ourselves. In order for us to have a good relationship with others we must first have a good relationship with ourselves. This relationship is the foundation to all the other relationships we will have.

High self worth enhances the chances of a better relationship. It’s even better if both partners have high self worth.

People with high self worth tend to respond more constructively and positively during times of conflict. And if we are in relationships, it’s just a matter of time before conflict arises.

Application: If right now your self worth is not what it should be, that’s ok.

2. Look for the best in your mate. We need to understand that how we see, and interpret our mate’s actions and words, affects how we feel and understand certain situations, this in turn affects how we act and behave toward them.

Application: Make a habit of catching your mate “doing good” you can do it both ways, celebrate it as it happens or you can write it down in your journal or somewhere, then pick a time where you and your mate can sit down and celebrate all the things you observed and are thankful for. Remember, what you celebrate gets repeated.

3. Have Fun. Many of the couples that are my clients and are working on their relationship tell me that “the fun” has gone out of the relationship. That is understandable, living in this high pressure world. A world where lots of things compete for our attention.

Stress and worrying about bills, kids, jobs and who knows what else can take the fun out of anything.

However, studies have shown that couples that are intentional in engaging in fun activities together have greater relationship satisfaction. As the saying goes, “Couples that play together, stay together.”

Application: Try this at least once. Choose an activity with your mate that maybe you have not done before. Make sure it’s something the both of you find fun. Some example are, going camping (not a favorite of my wife), go bike riding.

Something else that works wonders is being spontaneous, take off for an overnight stay at a nice hotel. Important note, both of you should agree on the activity.

Well there you have it, some tips that I’ve learned through my 33 years of marriage and that have helped me in my relationship. If you want to know more on how to work on your relationship I love to help contact me here.

If this post has helped you in some way, I’d love to hear about it. And if you like to help me out, please like and share this post so others can benefit also. Till next time!
