Pushing you to be your best

To be a successful writer, it’s not enough to be good with words. You also need public speaking training and a positive mindset to round out your career.

Today I offer up a few tools to help writers to be their best.

How does this relate to writing? I’ll tell you. It’s a common struggle for writers to keep ideas locked up in their head. It usually manifests as procrastination as they’re afraid to put fingers to keyboard in fear of imperfection. I’m here to tell you that improv class will get you out of that.

It will push you to be in the present, do things in the moment (however imperfect), and realize that there are supportive, non-judgmental people around you. You can’t get out of the exercises either because there is at least one person (your scene partner) or the whole group relying on you to carry your weight for the team.

The overall concept is that you must say yes to everything and add on to the story or you will shut down the scene.

If you’re a book writer and hope to one day be a successful author, this group is great for getting public speaking experience in a small, supportive environment. After all, one of the parts of book promotion is a book tour where authors generally give a speech in front of an audience.

This will also open you up to panel speaking gigs or media appearances for TV and radio.

It’s not good enough to just be a good writer. People want to connect with you in person to know more about your personality and expertise.

This is the exercise of already imagining whatever you want in your mind before it exists in the physical world.

It helps create the blueprint for what you want in your life, which leads you to align your actions with your goals.
