Learning and Unlearning

Full disclosure; I am a finger typer. I started using a computer when I was 18 and fumbled through learning how to type and the end result is my current finger typing approach. I use mostly 6 fingers and occasionally look down at the keyboard to locate an obscure key. My typing speed is average and is probably braising the ceiling for the suboptimal finger typing approach I use.

As much as I am excited that this new skill I am learning is one I’ll be able to get returns from almost immediately during my work, I am not using DVORAK and touch typing yet for my daily work. I think it only makes sense to start using it after I have covered the first 3 rows.

My mantra this week has been to focus on accuracy over speed. I often feel like I want to type faster because I know I can but I have found that my muscles have not memorized the key strokes yet, so I tend to make mistakes at an increasing rate whenever I focus on speed. Correcting the mistakes in turn slows down the typing. The irony there is not lost on me, my attempts to go faster at this point actually make me slower. haha :)
