Democrats Have Found Another Way to Do Nothing

Doing nothing might sound like an easy task but if the Democratic Party is any indication, sometimes it takes quite a lot of effort to stay committed to political inertia.

With a series of cascading crises from climate change to economic insecurity to voter suppression, Democrats have every reason to do something. And yet they continually invent excuses to do nothing.

Doing nothing is a tactic, of course. It is a method to maintain the status quo and impede reform that might threaten capital accumulation by the ruling class.

Democrats like to talk a lot about things that they claim they would like to do but, when push comes to shove, they claim they cannot do it for this or that reason.

Sinema already drew the feigned ire of the Democratic establishment last year when she voted against the minimum wage hike with an infamous, all too proud thumbs-down gesture on the floor of the Senate.

“‘It is the view I continue to hold. It is the belief I have shared many times in public settings and in private settings,’ Sinema said. ‘Eliminating the 60-vote threshold will simply guarantee that we lose a critical tool that we need to safeguard our democracy,’” The Hill reported.

Of course, any nuanced political observer will note that the true threat to our democracy in this moment is not majority rule but tyranny of the minority and prospects for one-party rule in the very near-term.
