Jab Imtiaz Wrote JHMS

After films like Love Aaj Kal, Tamasha or Jab We Met, Imtiaz Ali should ideally have improved in his story telling. Neither did that happen nor did he get a good scriptwriter. The film takes you…

An Indie Authors Journey

The Initial Chapter 001

In episode 315 of the #AskGaryVee show, Gary says something he has said multiple times before. He said he has zero expectations of anyone. He says he has never been let down because he never gave anyone the chance to do so.

Thinking about what Gary said in terms of a lifelong ambition of mine — becoming a published author — I suddenly felt that something I had been feeling had been articulated to me, giving me permission to go ahead and independently publish my book. Why would I give a traditional publisher the chance to let me down?

Writing a book is a project in and of itself. I’m going to finish my first book, my first project. The last thing I want is to have another project in the form of a bunch of proposals waiting for me when I type The End. After the creative part is done, I’ll be itching to start the next project so it is preferential to launch right into the marketing and promoting of the book so I can think about the next project distraction free.

Independently publishing my book makes this possible. Ken Burns teaches documentary filmmaking on Masterclass. In his class, he is talking about pitching to TV networks and how they might try and dictate how the budget is spent and where the commercials will go. He says that maintaining creative control means that if you don’t like my film, it’s my fault. This is much the same with indie publishing, I’m fine with that. I’ll take full responsibility.

I don’t have much against traditional publishing, I’m not even ruling it out for myself in the future. It just doesn’t work for me right now.

This article is the first of an ongoing series which will document my journey as an indie author and maybe, just maybe, inspire some of you to take the plunge. If it is the permission you have been waiting for, then you have it now. I’m giving you permission to write your book, to scratch that itch and change your life.
