Why the Buffalo Bills should move to Toronto

Introduction

As you all know the NFL is made up of 32 teams. And while some teams like the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and New England Patriots are some of the most liked around their city, the Buffalo Bills are not as lucky. Today, I am going to discuss why the Buffalo Bills should move further north, to the city of Toronto, Canada

History of American league sports teams in Toronto.

Out of the five most-viewed sports in the United States(Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Soccer), the NFL is the only league that does not have a sports team in Toronto. While the MLB has the Blue Jays, the NBA has the Raptors, the NHL has the Maple Leaves, and the MLS has Toronto FC the NFL has nothing.

NFL Expansion

The NFL has no team outside of the United States, although this might change with several theories of teams like the Los Angeles Chargers or the Jacksonville Jaguars moving out to London. While this may happen in the future the cost and logistics of having an NFL team in London are just too much for the NFL to allow a team to move there. However, Toronto is just 59 miles or barely over an hour away from Buffalo. There would be virtually no change to the NFL’s schedule or operations because the two cities are so close together. There would be no change of time zones which was one of the biggest problems of expanding to London.

Why leave Buffalo

If you were to watch a Bills game you would see the rows and rows of empty seats that weren’t sold. A big if not the biggest factor in this is Buffalo’s population which currently sits at 258,000 people a number which has decreased from 328,000 in 1990. Buffalo also has a metro population of 1.2 million. This shows people are leaving Buffalo at a drastic rate. Now I know that the city the team is in isn’t the biggest factor in people coming to games but it does help exponentially. A map of NFL fans(found at the bottom of the page) shows that the Bills don’t have a large following outside of Buffalo like the Patriots, Packers, Steelers, or Cowboys. There is also competition in New York against the Jets and Giants who are well-liked in the majority of the state except for the small corner where there are the largest amount of bills fans. The commissioner of the league has often called into question the viability of the Bills and whether they will stay in Buffalo. In short, while the Buffalo Bills make enough to stay in Buffalo but the NFL knows that it will make lots of money elsewhere and it will act to make sure it does because it is a corporation and exists to make money.

Why go to Toronto

Toronto is the biggest city in Canada with a population of just under 3 million people and a metro population of just under 6 million. The only football team that Toronto has is the Toronto Argonauts, a CFL team that at the time of recording has a record of 4–14. The Bills, on the other hand, have a record of 6–3 and a good shot of making the playoffs. This difference in the two teams along with the league the Bills belong to would be incredibly helpful to the marketing and branding of the Bills. If the Bills were to move to Toronto, they would be the only NFL team outside of the US. More specifically they would be the only NFL team in Canada making them Canada’s team. Except for everyone living in the Quebec province of course. Speaking of Quebec that is just another reason to put the Bills in Toronto. It sets up the possibility of other teams making the trip across the border. Quebec more specifically is in a rivalry with Toronto which makes for another epic rivalry like the packers and bears and bringing in more money for the NFL.

What a team in Toronto could look like

If the Bills were to move to Toronto I don’t believe they would still be the Bills as the NFL would want to rebrand them to a new Canadian audience. A good team name would be the Mounties because this team won’t just be Toronto’s but more broadly Canada’s team and the Canadian Mounties are an iconic symbol of Canada’s. In an even more patriotic way, it is a show of gratitude to the Canadian police for their service. Their colors would be red, black and khaki just like the uniforms of the Mounties. Now the Stadium and other things like that are entirely up to the Owners of the franchise.
