Senior Entrepreneurship

Living longer is a pervasive idea that widely spread into the world. But what we are missing is people’s healthspan: the period people live without getting a disease or having disabled.

How people’s healthspan will increase in the future.

And after people retired, the portion of retired people who can work and think the same as workforces will grow more substantial in the future

But after they quit their career, they face numerous problems. First, they might worry about outliving their savings due to the more extended period of living that will cause senior poverty. Secondly, Increasing the sole family due to the lower marriage rate happening in millennial age will them to senior loneliness. People are starting to conquer chronical as they can track their health status in realtime thanks to advanced health care technology. Researchers and doctors keep researching cancer and dementia, and the rate of people getting these diseases is decreasing. It is no doubt that loneliness will become a crucial problem for the senior group in the future.

Then how can we solve this problem? Many of the issues occur since seniors left the workplace, which is the primary socializing space for their entire life. The solution is simple. If we let them return to the workplace, the problem will be solved. There is even research tells that compared to people with jobs, those who were unemployed or retired were 2.75 times more likely to report their health as “poor” or “fair.”

But this is not a simple matter. There is a lack of qualified jobs in the market. The government’s policy to let people retire at their age of 65 seems unlikely to change soon since there is a notion that jobs should be focused on a younger generation. This policy change will face huge opposition. We also can not neglect the length of changing policies that usually takes several years.

So how can we encourage healthy seniors to go to the workplace? My idea is to boost senior’s entrepreneurship that brings their lifetime work experience skill to the table. Many people focus more on the younger generation’s startup, which is mostly focused on innovation and technology. But a recent US Census Breau study reveals that 60-years-olds are three times as likely to found a successful start-up than people half their age.

We can overcome senior’s current/expected problems with senior entrepreneurship that create more jobs, know senior’s needs, make communities, providing salaries, boost economies, and let them socialize.

But they face two problems. First, they lack social support. It is not hard to imagine that tackling the task of becoming an entrepreneur is often hard when one is feeling insecure and enduring a period of low self-esteem. Secondly, they have lower technical or trendy skill s than their younger counterparts.

To help seniors, maybe we can inspire a path to their starting own business, guide them new skills, having advice from their mentors, and consequently, they can be ready to start their own business.
