My Reflections on the Andela EPIC Values

Its day two of Andela bootcamp and am getting to know more people despite the fact that am attending week one miles away in Kampala. This is thanks to Andela’s remote working system which is availing me with all the necessary tools I need to feel like am on ground. Andela has EPIC values which have made it the perfect hatchery for the world’s top software developers and today I would like to write about my reflection of these EPIC values.

To break EPIC down, we arrive at Excellence, Passion, Integrity and Collaboration. These put together form the ultimate formula for success and no wonder this is reflected in the Andela community.

Excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. No one was born excellent but it is achieved through getting back up when ever you fall. Just like a child learning to walk, we are bound to fall a few times and its the repetitive willingness to learn and never giving up that gets us to the point of running. Therefore in my view , giving it another try and never giving up is the clearest road to excellence.

Andela provides a safe zone for asking questions which helps in accelerated learning as well as the constant feedback and encouragement that will push you in the right direction. This enables continuous learning and betterment of one’s self in programming, confidence and people skills.

Passion is the strong feeling one has towards something. Passion fuels the mind and body to reach greater heights. Choose a job you are passionate about and you will never work a day in your life. This is so because you can never get bored by something you are passionate about and hence every work day will be a fun day. It is this passion that keeps me trying harder every time and I know its no doubt am getting better by the day.

The passion that drives the Andela community is undeniable and this is reflected in the day to day interactions with several Andelans. The willingness with which the learning facilitators correct and guide learners is one I had not seen anywhere else before and would love to be a part of .

Integrity is the quality of being honest and having moral principles. This means being able to take responsibility from time to time and respecting the code of privacy and security at all times. Integrity also entails learning from one’s mistakes which is the key to improvement in any walk of life. This is highly encouraged at Andela and its the key to good learning. Honesty is also perfectly present in the feedback given by the learning facilitators and honesty is the key to any successful relationship and partnership in any filed of work.

Harassment, discrimination and bullying are among the strongest enemies to integrity and one can not achieve it while carrying out one of the three. Harassment and Bullying impede the person on the receiving end from any productivity and hence its a progress killer. Discrimination entails unequal treatment of persons which prevents equal opportunities with in a group hence a poor output.

Collaboration is the act of working in a group in order to archive a certain goal. In my experience, work that is done in a group is most of the time better than individual work. This is mostly because group-work is always more time efficient as different teammates take on different tasks and combine their resources to get an output. Group discussions aid in a better understanding of the problem statement and hence a better approach to the task at hand is achieved.

Group work provides more learning opportunities due to the constant and continuous sharing of ideas which benefits the entire team. Andela encourages collaboration and teamwork which ensures continuous learning and betterment of everyone in the community.
