This Writing Life

Or so they tell me.

They tell me this in lengthy pieces about how much money I can make and how I can write from a beach chair somewhere in Fiji. Bits and pieces showing the way to incredible riches promise me that my writing can make me a millionaire. All I have to do is follow the plan. Simply take the ingredients for highly effective writing, mix them, mash them, and sit back while they bake into a flawless stream of beautifully passive income.

Writing is more than a side hustle — it’s a high-earning potential calling.

And anyone who says differently is just a hater. Just a person not in alignment with the greater desire of the universe for every living thing to be incredibly successful no matter where it falls in the food chain. They are a negative entity and need to be removed from your circle so you have room for more positivity.

Or so they tell me.

Usually, this comes in the form of arguments about algorithms or mourning a golden past. All pasts are golden to someone. Writers aren’t valued enough. People don’t pay for the work of wordsmiths. The game is rigged. Things have changed. Readers no longer have the sophistication or attention span or taste to appreciate our unrecognized genius.

Take your pick — there’s plenty of pain to go around.

Sometimes this pain appears differently. Writing as addiction, a compulsion we cannot walk away from that seems to cause us far more harm than good. This is the romantic pain of the starving, persecuted artist. A tale often told by someone who has never been persecuted and doesn’t know what it is to starve. Romantic pain seems a good way to justify the pursuit of a seemingly unattainable dream to your doubting friends and little else.

Or so they tell me.

That’s why I need a guide. Someone to show me the way through the traditional or the new. A guru to help…
