Why every Cinematographer needs to read and study comics

Virtually every child growing up loved comic books, be it our favourite Super hero comic or just the daily read on our newspaper daily strips and Sunday strips.

Different kids loved comics for different reasons, either the creative use of colours, boxes and onomatopoeias to tell stories or just the story itself.

But what intrigued me more about comics was the fact that you could understand what was going on in the story mainly by paying close attention to how the Artist drew the scenes, the characters in them and the placement of the boxes. Even without indicating what the characters were saying you could figure out the plot yourself.

This is very similar to Cinematography, after all cinematography is the use of motion picture Photography to tell a story and it is well known that Story Boards which by the way share a very close semblance with the method in which comic books are written, help Cinematographers make choices about Camera angles, lighting and depth of field to be used.

Think of Comic books as a visual script, full of great ideas for your next project.
