The Trump Future

Do we really think we will get out of this mess intact? Trump is not only domestically stupid, he is disastrously stupid in foreign affairs.

The longer term and bigger problem is that he will fundamentally change the way Americans think and act politically and morally. Since 1945, America has formed and guaranteed the world order that has produced peace among the great powers in the nuclear age. But now a man without self control or any sense of responsibility, a blusterer, a bully, a coward, has been elected to the highest office in the land, with absolutely no experience of any kind in politics.

Americans elected him. It was not just the stupid whites people have spoken of, but the educated ethno-nationalists who support, secretly or not, the Steve Bannon white supremacist view of life in America. To them, it is all about the colour of skin and they buy into the unscientific racist nonsense peddled by the Bannonites. Trump has already coarsened American political discourse. That a man who brands whole nations as rapists and criminals, loves Russia, extols authoritarian leaders, speaks approvingly of female sexual assault, could get elected, is disgraceful. It shows how America has changed over the years. It seems to have tired of being a good example. It no longer is an example to other nations, except for being an example of how not to do it.
