5 Keys to Running Mastery

The late author and aikido master George Leonard identified five keys to mastery of any subject or undertaking. I will discuss those five keys and how they apply to becoming a running master.

The first key to running mastery is instruction. Even though running is one of the simplest forms of exercise, runners who want to become masters must submit to instruction of some form.

One way to get running instruction is to hire a coach. A coach can design a training plan you can use or review your current training plan and suggest improvements. A coach can evaluate your running form to find inefficiencies, and they can teach you how to run with better form. They can analyze your diet and suggest improvements to make your running more effective.

You can also coach yourself. The internet has a plethora of resources available to you. You can read blogs, running magazine articles, watch videos, and scan Twitter. The problem with self-coaching is that you will undoubtedly come across conflicting advice.

I coach myself and the way I handle all the conflicting advice is to stick to just a few sources. This way, I am getting mostly consistent advice on things from training plans to diet to cross-training.

Another way to get instruction is to join a running group. Joining a running group will give you access to other runners, who will have a lot to teach you, especially runners who have been running longer than you.

In order to benefit from instruction, you need to have a growth mindset. With a growth mindset, you don’t mind receiving advice and accept you don’t know everything there is to know about running, and that others may know some things you can use to be a better runner.

The most important thing you can do is to practice running. Every running expert I’ve ever come across believes the best thing you can do for your running is to increase your volume.

But you need to do more than just run a lot. You need to be mindful about your running. I find slow runs to be the best way to do this as I pay more attention to my running form. When I’m running hard or running long, it’s too easy to get caught up in the attempt and the desire…
