Why I Choose to Be Triggered

And how it’s transformed my life for the better.

In the age of trigger warnings and heightened sensitivity, choosing to be triggered may seem odd.

I think words can cause emotional damage, but only if you let them. And this is coming from someone whose been bullied and emotionally abused as a child.

Being triggered by words is something to explore and remedy, not accept. I don’t think I would have survived much of the verbal abuse I’ve received throughout my life if I let myself be “triggered” by words.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is a mantra I’ve been repeating to myself for years, especially when someone’s words sting me.

I remember crying for a week when a cousin called me fat when I was a teen. But during that week, I reflected on my reaction and realized that I could have responded better. I decided to take that insult and use it as motivation to get healthier, rather than dwell on it.

You give words their power. You choose how to take someone’s comments. Why are they telling me this? Is it true? Is it false? If it’s true, how can I improve? If it’s false, work through it until you can let it go.

And just because someone says something that hurts, doesn’t mean they don’t love or care for you. In fact, I later thanked my cousin who criticized my weight. If it weren’t for her nudging me as a teenager, I may have never gotten healthier. Her hurtful, stinging words ended up helping me.

Now, whenever I’m “triggered” by someone’s words, I question myself. Why is this bothering me? Is there some dark truth…
