Blogging Tips for the Essayist

Turn your essay into a blog post people want to read.

I used to teach middle school students to write, so when I retired, I wanted to build my writing career. I began writing blog posts to practice writing for a broader audience and to build my following.

The problem was that I wrote essays that didn’t fit the format or function of blogging. I faced a learning curve but also realized there were many similarities.

Chances are if you have strong feelings about something, or you feel a deep purpose, you have a worthy topic. However, a worthy topic is not enough. Like an essay, you must have a focused message. You might want to discuss school safety and how it relates to COVID-19. That is your topic.

Creating a well-defined message is essential. You must take a clear position and then set out to prove your point. This is what you do in an essay. You do the same when blogging.

‘COVID-19 Makes School Safety Impossible’ gives the reader a clear idea of where you will go with your content. Know what you mean to say, and why you need to say it. In a blog post, this statement can be used as a title and merely implied throughout your post, not explicitly stated.

Your reader needs to identify with your position, so you must seat them squarely in your chair. Show them how you came to your thinking. Lead them into your world. Tell them your story. Work to make your reader feel your point of view.

Identifying your target reader will help you use effective strategies to reach them. Think about that one perfect reader for your post. Are you trying to change their minds or preaching to the choir? Maybe you need to do both. Then you must make sure to do just that in your discussion on the page.

This balanced approach is common for most academic essays. You bring in various types of evidence to support your assertions. In a blog, you still want to support your claims, but blogs come from a more personal place. Use your personal experience and create personal appeals for your audience.
