Deforestation or How to Breathe

For millions of years, the human being was free to roam the earth, reproduce and basically be one with nature. The difference between now and then is that somewhere along the path the human creature itself decided some 2.3 million square kilometres of forests needs to go down.

The result was that out of the original 16 million square kilometres of forest that once adorned the earth surface, only 6 million remain. The math, when done right, tell us that more than 9 million square kilometres of forest are no more.

This is some staggering numbers. Deforestation itself occurs for several different reasons many being a basic need such as fuel or building material. The rest of had to do with clearing the land for pastures or plantations.

Many of tree are cut down illegally, for it is cheaper to just cut down the tree and run instead of paying some form of tax for such a deed. Of course, ignorance has to do a lot with it.

The missing link is that many of the people that cut down trees illegally know nothing about the loss of the natural habitat of many forest animals and how this in itself affects the biodiversity, yet alone know about the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Deforestation itself is among the reasons for the global climate change. Needless to say that it is the key source for the enhanced greenhouse effect. Getting back to the numbers, deforestation accounts for 20% of the world greenhouse gas emissions.

And the story itself can go on and on about the role of the carbon dioxide during the process of photosynthesis but that won’t change the actual fact, but then again, what can.

The only way one can fight against this is through massive media informing, and logically, reforestation, and it is already a global trend. Based on a research the global forests should increase by 10% which is the size of India by the year 2050.

If the global trend continues on its path of healing the earth, the forests might once more allow the human to finally breathe.
