Tired and Frustrated

Tired of all the crying of FAKE news. Tired of all the drama in our politics. Tired of people being so sensitive you can’t even talk without worrying about offending someone. I mean it is one thing to try to educate yourself in being more culturally aware and recognize your own priviledge and it is a whole other thing where you feel you have to censor everything that comes out of your mouth in fear you may offend someone.

I apparently offended someone at work recently because I was talking about pain medication. To put this in context, I had been in severe pain with my shoulder and I was extremely frustrated with my doctor because he would not prescribe me anything for the pain. The rationale for this was due to the fact I had receive pain medication in the summer when I had shingles, they had given me pain meds before they realized I had shingles. So because I had pain medication in the summer they wouldn’t give me any for my shoulder. Of course this issue with not being able to get the medication stems from this whole opioid epidemic which is something I brought up and shared my frustration about. I was very frustrated and speaking with folks I considered to be friends and confidants but apparently that wasn’t the case.

Now this was a month ago. Since then I was given another cortisone shot which has decreased my pain considerable. To the point that at least ibuprofen is helping and I am not complaining about it like I was. Today I get pulled into HR office asking me to refrain talking about pain medication because I apparently offended someone. I am so irritated by this and mostly because this person couldn’t just come to me and talk to me about it. They felt the need to go to HR. Our organization only has 42 people in it. Most of these people I consider friends and those I spoke with about the situation are among those, yet they felt the need to go to HR instead of coming to me.

Now this is just an example where I feel our society has taken political correctness to the next level. Especially those of us who consider ourselves liberal or progressive, we live up to the rights term of being called snowflakes. We need to grow a backbone and get over ourselves. If something upsets you then have the courage to go to the person directly and speak with them about it. Nine times out of ten it was not intended in the way it was received and you probably can have a decent conversation about it. You still may not see eye to eye but guess what that is the beauty of our country. We can disagree and supposedly have civil debates about it but can also agree to disagree.

Now don’t get me wrong, our President takes this to a whole new level and there are others like him that are completely in the wrong. They are not the ones I speak of. I am talking about those who may say things you don’t like but aren’t necessarily trying to be purposefully hurtful.

So ultimately we need to grow thicker skin and stop taking things so personally and if things truly did offend you then speak up and go to the person directly. Don’t go talk to other people about it or post about it on Facebook. Unfortunately I do not know who lodged the complaint against me or I would do exactly that. I would go to that person and talk to them about it. Maybe that is just me but nothing gets resolved stewing over things or avoiding the situation and surely doesn’t get better when the other party hears about it second hand.
